Motorcycling - Steps toward Riding

Steps taken to enjoy motorcycling

  1. Signed up for Basic Rider Course. Held at Leeward Community College (LCC) for 3 weekends.
  2. Purchase protective equipment.
  3. Research type of bike => cruiser or standard.
  4. Research cost of insurance => cheap via Progressive/GEICO.
  5. Research riding skills => Proficient Motorcycling by David L. Hough  & MSF Basic Rider Course Handbook.
  6. Basic Rider Course @ LCC.  Completed 072906.
  7. Purchase motorcycle, new or used.  => used 2003 Yamaha Virago @V250R
  8. City and County of Honolulu Written Exam.  Completed 080306.
  9. City and County of Honolulu Road Exam (if no waiver). Not needed, passed written with 100% correct.
  10. Practice around the neighborhood & school parking lot. On going 080306.
  11. Practice on main street. On going 081206.
  12. Practice, practice, and continue on practicing...
  13. Cruise the streets, feel part of a new community and enjoy Hawaii.

First Motorcycle

  • 2003 Yamaha Virago XV250R.  Purchased used 072906, ~ 4450 miles, luggage rack, and mechanically sound.  1st drop, 080306 via quick stop practice.  Solo 20MPH crash, 081506 via gravel braking practice in an elementary parking lot.
